About David

Wondering who David Claiborne aka DC is?

Here is everything you ever wanted to know (and probably way more) about David Claiborne and his life.

What makes this blog different from all the other strength and conditioning blogs out there?

After working with hundreds of athletes from the professional down to the junior high level, I feel that I have a ton of information to share that can help take your training to the next level and transform you athletically, mentally, and physically.

I’ve done the crap workouts, taken the crap supplements, and tried every fad diet and training method out there that guaranteed to put on size, get me faster, give me insane numbers in the gym, and get rock hard 6 pack abs…

None of that crap worked and now that I’ve spent thousands of hours in the trenches training athletes and myself my goal is to help those who want to be the best in everything they do get the maximal results without making a lot of the same mistakes that I did.

What’s your favorite strength training exercise?

If I could pick just one, it would have to be either some sort of deadlift or farmer walk variation…  Hmm I guess that’s two choices.  I’ll go with farmer walks because there is so much that can be done with them to work the whole body. (Yes I know that isn’t a specific exercise but so what).

What about conditioning?

Since I live in Houston, Texas and we don’t have hills, and most people aren’t going to have a prowler they can pull out and sprint with on a weekly basis, I’m going to have to go with truck or car pushes… We use trucks down in Texas of course.

Knocking a few sets of these out for 50-100 yards 1-3 x week with short rest will get you in shape… and fast.

Why the name Genesis?  That doesn’t sound very hardcore…

When I first opened the doors to my facility www.Genesis-AP.com, there were no other training facilities like mine in Houston and even really in Texas.  So I thought of it as the true beginning of an athlete’s journey towards unlocking their athletic potential.  Since Genesis is the first book of the bible, it seemed fitting.

What’s your favorite healthy meal?

I could eat this meal every night for dinner and never get tired of it… My wife on the other hand would go insane.  A huge grass fed New York Strip, Caesar salad, steamed broccoli, with a bowl of mixed berries and pineapple for dessert.

What’s your favorite cheat meal?

I have been known to eat anything and everything during cheat/reefed time, but overall it would have to be a dozen donuts and gallon of whole chocolate milk.

Other that donuts, what other “vices” do you have?

I am always down to have a beer or two, especially if it’s among friends and they aren’t serving any of that light crap.  A good, thick, unique, dark beer is definitely another one of my favorite things when the time calls.

What does your daily schedule look like?

I try to do something physical at least 5 days a week, but typically 6-7.  This ranges from 3-4 gym workouts, flag football or lacrosse workouts, sprints, mobility, or some general conditioning the rest of the week.

Although I try to eat 4-5 meals a day and get 8 hours of sleep, because I’m so busy not just running Genesis but also spending 8-10 hours a day coaching athletes, I typically end up with 6 hours of sleep and 3 (4 if I’m lucky) meals per day.

I’m a big power nap kind of guy and try to get at least 1 10-15 minute nap in around noon or 1:00 before the afternoon athlete sessions start up.

I try to spend at least 1-2 hours a day writing articles, reading what’s new in the training field, and educating my coaches to make sure that the Genesis program and myself are on top of the game and getting our athletes the best results possible.

In my down time, I spend as much of it as possible relaxing with my wife and son.

What kind of music gets played at Genesis during training?

I personally am willing to put on whatever, as long as it helps at least one athlete get fired up during their training session.  But typically it bounces back and forth from rap/hip-hop and metal… With a little dubstep and techno filling in here and there.

The most played artists on the Genesis iPod are:

  • Eminem
  • Jay-Z
  • Kanye West
  • Pantera
  • Metallica
  • Rage Against the Machine
  • Skrillex
  • Blood Brothers
  • Beastie Boys

After always being around athletes, do you have any favorite sports teams?

I’ll always be a die-hard Texas Tech Red Raider and Houston Texan fan.

All of the Other Info:

It was in high school that David decided to dedicate him self to becoming bigger, stronger and faster. By his senior year he had packed on over 20lbs of pure muscle to reach a total of 180lbs, and his commitment to this work paid off when he placed second in the 100 meter dash at his Texas 5A district track meet with a time of 10.84.

From then on David was hooked to gaining strength. But not happy with simply becoming bigger for his own sake, he discovered that what truly made him come alive was training other athletes.

It wasn’t long before he graduated from Texas Tech with a degree in Exercise Sports Science and earned his NSCA CSCS – Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist Certification. During this time he continued to train his body as well as his mind, and had grown to a lean 225lbs – able to run the 40-yard dash in an impressive 4.57.

David’s clientele numbers high into the hundreds and range from professional athletes to junior high athletes; from military personnel and weekend warriors to everyday people who are simply determined to improve themselves – to become bigger, stronger and leaner.

It’s David’s unique philosophy that keeps people coming for more – a combination of contemporary scientific approaches, old-school strength and conditioning techniques leaves every one of his clients far beyond their original goals – and eager for more.

David opened Genesis Athletic Performance in September 2009.  It was located in a small warehouse and had zero athletes, but grew through his determination and passion to create the best and most hardcore training facility not just in Houston, but in Texas.

In October 2011, David moved Genesis Athletic Performance into a new 4000 sq ft and now works with over 100 athletes ranging from the professional down to the junior high level.
